BRIDGES TO THE FOREST
Synopsis
This video showcases a key example of Hutan’s efforts towards a peaceful human-wildlife coexistence in the Kinabatangan floodplain. It features Hutan’s community-led orangutan research team conducting one of the world's longest-running studies of wild orangutans in existence and explains how past habitat degradation and fragmentation now threaten the species of extinction.

The video also highlights the pioneering partnership between Hutan and a forward-thinking oil palm grower to create safe passages for orangutans, elephants and other wildlife through the plantation. This collaboration has led to the establishment of more than 400 ha of wildlife corridors, the reforestation with native trees of 50-m buffer zones along rivers and streams, the integration of pioneering agroforestry practices and environmental education and training programmes for the people living side-by-side with wildlife. These efforts have already resulted in a 90% decrease in elephant crop damage. and the presence of two resident female orangutans in preserved forested areas within the plantation.

This partnership demonstrates that land sharing and innovative agriculture practices can bring tangible benefits to oil palm growers while being key to wildlife survival.
